Well water testing: frequently asked questions

What should I test my well water for?
At minimum, test private well water for total coliform bacteria and E. coli every year, plus nitrate if you live near farmland or have an infant in the home. A broader Level 1 or Level 2 panel adds the metals, minerals, and chemistry that affect both safety and plumbing. If you are not sure, the Annual Well Safety Check covers the common essentials in one kit.
How often should I test my private well?
Most state health departments recommend testing a private well at least once a year for bacteria and nitrate, and any time after flooding, well repairs, a noticeable change in taste, color, or odor, or before buying or selling a home.
How does at-home well water testing work?
Order a kit and it ships to your door. You collect a sample at your tap or wellhead in a few minutes, then mail it back in the prepaid package to the certified lab. You receive an easy-to-read report explaining what was found, how it compares to drinking-water guidelines, and what to do next.
Are these water tests done by a certified lab?
Yes. Samples are analyzed by SimpleLab and its Tap Score certified laboratory network. DrillerDB helps you choose the right test for your well; the certified lab performs the analysis and reporting.
Which water test kit should I choose?
If you have never tested, or it has been more than a year, start with the Annual Well Safety Check. Choose the Basic Bacteria Check for a quick safety screen, the Nitrate Check if you are near agriculture or have an infant, or the New Well / Real Estate Baseline for a comprehensive record on a new well or a home sale.
