About this test
The Arsenic Check measures the level of arsenic in your well water. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that dissolves into groundwater from rock and soil, and it is found at elevated levels in many parts of the country - often with no industrial source nearby. It is completely invisible, with no taste, color, or smell. The EPA drinking-water limit is 10 parts per billion, but health effects are linked to long-term exposure even at lower levels, so a precise measurement matters. This kit tells you exactly where your arsenic level stands against the EPA standard.
Why it matters
Long-term arsenic exposure is linked to skin, bladder, and lung cancers and other serious health effects, and because it is naturally occurring and invisible, many affected well owners have no idea. - Most arsenic in private wells is natural - it dissolves into groundwater from surrounding rock and soil. Some regions have naturally high levels with no industrial source. Your state health department can tell you if your area is known for arsenic.
- Can I taste or see arsenic?
- No. Arsenic is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Laboratory testing is the only way to detect it.
- What if my arsenic is above the limit?
- Use an alternate source for drinking and cooking while you act. Treatment options such as reverse osmosis, adsorptive media, or anion exchange can remove arsenic; choose a system rated for it and retest after installation.
