About this test
The Uranium Check measures uranium in your well water. Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive metal that dissolves into groundwater from granite and other rock formations, and it is common in many regions - particularly the upper Midwest, the Rockies, and parts of the Northeast. It poses a chemical risk to the kidneys as well as a radiological one, and like other dissolved metals it is invisible and tasteless. The EPA drinking-water limit is 30 micrograms per liter. This kit tells you whether uranium is present in your water and how it compares to the standard.
Why it matters
Uranium in drinking water is both a chemical toxin (primarily to the kidneys) and a source of radiation exposure, and it is entirely natural and undetectable without a test. Because it tracks with certain bedrock types and often accompanies radon, well owners in affected regions can carry elevated levels unknowingly. If found, reverse osmosis or anion exchange can effectively remove it.
