Lab Samples and the DNR XML Export
The Lab page holds your water quality samples, your lab customers, and your public water system records. It is also where you produce the DNR XML file that covers a range of sample dates.
This page shows you how to find a sample, and how to download the export.
Quick Start
- Open the Lab page at console.drillerdb.com/lab.
- Type a lab sample number, an owner name, or a customer name into the search box at the top, then click Search.
- Click Edit on the row you want.
- Scroll down to Print Reports.
- Read the dates in DNR export start and DNR export end, then click Download DNR XML Export.
Before you start
Three things must all be true before the Lab page opens:
- You are signed in.
- Your role is admin or office.
- Your company is on the lab allowlist.
The allowlist holds one company today: company 1, Sam's Well Drilling. No other company reaches the Lab page, whatever its plan. Your plan matters as well, because lab reports are a Professional feature, so a lab company on a lower plan loses the page too.
No failed check gives you a message, and each one sends you somewhere different. If you are not signed in, you land on the sign-in page, and the console returns you to the Lab page once you sign in. If your role is not admin or office, you land on your own start page: the dashboard for most roles, Accounting for an invited accountant, the customer portal for a portal user. If your company is off the allowlist, or your plan does not include lab reports, you land on the dashboard.
The export controls are narrower still. They render only for the admin role, and only on a sample that is already saved. An office user sees the sample editor and the print reports, but no export boxes.
Step-by-Step: Find a sample
- Open the Lab page.
- Type into the search box at the top of Water Quality Samples, then click Search. The search matches the lab sample number, the DNR sample number, the owner's first name, the owner's last name, the well address, and the customer name.
- To narrow by source, click All, Internal, or External. Internal means a lab sample number that does not start with E. External means one that does.
- The page lists 25 samples at a time. To widen the list, click the link at the bottom of Recent Samples. It reads Load 25 more, or a smaller number when fewer than 25 are left.
- To go back to the full list, click the Clear link that appears beside the Search button. It drops the search term, keeps any source or date filter you set, and returns the list to 25 rows.
- Click Edit on the row you want.
The matching samples appear in two tables. The upper table is Recent Samples and it is read-only. The lower table, also titled Water Quality Samples, carries the Edit button. Both tables show the same search results.
The lower table has its own search box, worded the same way. That box filters only the samples already on the page, so it cannot find a sample the server has not sent yet. Use the box at the top when you want to search every sample.
If you already know the number, go straight to the sample. The address
console.drillerdb.com/lab?sample= followed by the lab sample number opens the
editor for that sample. The record ID works there too.
What the date boxes start with
Both date boxes are filled in when the page loads. The window is the last 24 months, ending today. On 7 September 2026 the boxes read 2024-09-07 and 2026-09-07.
The start day never rolls forward into the next month. On 29 February the start date becomes 28 February two years earlier, so the window keeps its full 24 months instead of starting a day late.
Both boxes are date pickers, so your browser decides how the date looks on screen. The value sent to the server is always the YYYY-MM-DD form the DNR validator requires.
Step-by-Step: Download the DNR XML export
- Open a saved sample, as above. The export controls sit in the Print Reports section, below the report buttons.
- Set DNR export start and DNR export end.
- Click Download DNR XML Export.
- The file downloads with a name built from the range, such as
dnr-well-dates-2024-09-07-2026-09-07.xml. The message line then reads "Downloaded DNR XML export."
The file covers every sample collected inside the range, not only the sample you opened. Opening a sample is how you reach the button. It does not narrow the file.
Each download carries its own batch id, built from the range and the clock, so the DNR does not reject a second file for the same dates as a duplicate.
When the download does not happen
"Choose a start and end date for the DNR XML export." One of the two boxes is empty. Fill both in and click again. Nothing is sent to the server until both boxes carry a date.
"startDate cannot be later than endDate." The start date falls after the end date. Swap the two dates.
"startDate must be a date in YYYY-MM-DD form."
A box holds something the validator does not read as a date. Pick the date again
with the picker. The same sentence appears for endDate.
"Unable to download DNR XML export." The request failed and the server sent no reason. Click the button again. If the message comes back, write to support@drillerdb.com and quote the two dates you used.
No export boxes under Print Reports. Either your role is office rather than admin, or the sample has not been saved yet. Save the sample, then look again.
The file holds fewer samples than you expected. The export selects on the collection date, so a sample with a missing or unreadable collection date is left out whatever its lab sample number. Open the samples you expected to see and check the collected date before you file.
