Map Layers

Learn about the map layers available in DepthMap including well logs and parcel boundaries

Map Layers

DepthMap provides several data layers that can be toggled on and off to customize your view. These layers add context to well locations and help you understand the geographic landscape.

Quick Start: Toggle Map Layers

  1. Look for the bottom toolbar on the map
  2. Click a layer button to toggle it on/off
  3. Active layers show a highlighted button state
  4. Combine layers to see wells with parcel context

Enable both Well Logs and Parcel Boundaries together to see which property each well belongs to. This combination is ideal for site assessments.

Step-by-Step Workflow

  1. Look for the bottom toolbar on the map
  2. Click a layer button to toggle it on/off
  3. Active layers show a highlighted button state
  4. Combine layers to see wells with parcel context

Bottom Toolbar

The bottom toolbar contains toggle buttons for each available layer. Active layers show a highlighted button state. Click a button to toggle the layer on or off.

Well Logs Layer

The Well Logs layer displays registered water wells from public records. This is the primary data layer in DepthMap.

What You See

When enabled, wells appear as markers on the map. At wider zoom levels, nearby wells are grouped into clusters showing the count of wells in that area. Zoom in to see individual well markers.

Well Data

Click any well marker to view:

  • Well identification number
  • Total depth drilled
  • Construction date
  • Property owner (at time of construction)
  • Well type (domestic, commercial, irrigation)
  • Static water level
  • Link to original well log

Data Sources

Well data comes from state geological surveys, environmental agencies, and public records. Coverage varies by state. The database includes over 14 million well records nationwide and is updated regularly.

Parcel Boundaries Layer

The Parcel Boundaries layer displays property lines overlaid on the map. This helps identify which property a well belongs to and understand land ownership patterns.

What You See

Property boundaries appear as lines on the map. Some areas show more detailed boundary data than others based on available county records.

Use Cases

  • Identify property lines when locating wells
  • Understand setback distances from property boundaries
  • Verify well locations on specific parcels
  • Plan new well locations relative to property lines

Coverage

Parcel data availability varies by county. Most areas have boundary data, though some rural regions may have limited coverage.

Layer Combinations

You can enable multiple layers simultaneously to see wells in context with property boundaries. Common combinations include:

  • Wells + Parcels - See which property each well belongs to
  • Wells only - Focus on well density and distribution
  • Parcels only - Examine property boundaries without well markers

Performance Considerations

Each active layer adds rendering load to the map. If you experience slowness:

  • Disable layers you're not actively using
  • Zoom in to reduce the number of visible features
  • Allow the map to fully load before adding more layers

Layer Visibility at Different Zoom Levels

Some layers adjust their display based on zoom level:

Zoom LevelWells DisplayParcels Display

Medium zoomIndividual markersBoundaries appear

Enabling multiple layers increases map rendering load. If performance slows, disable layers you're not actively using and zoom in to reduce visible features.

Troubleshooting

Parcels not showing?

  • Zoom in closer—parcels appear at medium/close zoom levels
  • Some rural areas have limited parcel data coverage
  • Allow time for layer to load after toggling

Wells appearing as clusters?

  • Zoom in to see individual well markers
  • Clusters indicate many wells in the area
  • Click a cluster to zoom into that area

Map loading slowly?

  • Disable layers you're not using
  • Zoom in to reduce visible features
  • Check internet connection speed
