DrillerDB Data & Research
DrillerDB maintains a compiled database of 18,029,601 North American water-well records, drawn from public well-completion and well-log records. Coverage spans all 50 U.S. states and 6 Canadian provinces (Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and New Brunswick). Each record is normalized to one common schema, geocoded, and linked back to the source document it came from. This page documents what the dataset contains, how it is sourced, and how to cite it. The record count was verified against the database on July 2, 2026.
The corpus holds 18,029,601 water-well records spanning 50 U.S. states and 6 Canadian provinces. Every record carries the fields listed in the next section where the source log reported them: location, well construction, geology, and provenance. Coverage is uneven by jurisdiction because it tracks what each state or provincial agency has published and digitized, not the number of wells that physically exist.
Record counts per U.S. state, figures as of 2026-07-02 and recomputed quarterly. These counts total 16,108,916 records on file across the 50 U.S. states. Canadian province counts are listed separately below.

The dataset holds 18,029,601 North American records (verified July 2, 2026): 16,108,916 across the 50 U.S. states and 1,878,696 across the 6 Canadian provinces. The remaining 41,989 records are a Montana oil-and-gas source code that is excluded from the water-well per-state figures. Per-state U.S. figures are recomputed quarterly (most recently 2026-07-02).
Each record follows one common schema. Not every source log fills every field, so a given record carries the values its originating document reported. The fields group into four categories:
The records are compiled from public well-completion and well-log records published by state and provincial water-resource agencies and geological surveys. Licensed drillers file these reports with the state or province after a well is completed, and those agencies publish them as public records. DrillerDB collects those published records; it does not generate the underlying measurements.
Every record retains the URL of the originating source document, so any single value can be traced back to the record it came from. Records from different states and provinces arrive in different formats and field names, so each one is normalized to a single common schema and geocoded to latitude and longitude. Where a source log leaves a field blank, that field stays empty in the record rather than being estimated.
Per-state U.S. statistics, including the coverage counts in the U.S. table above, are recomputed quarterly or after a major state ingest. The most recent recompute was 2026-07-02. When a state's sub-district source codes exist, they are summed into a single state total during that step, which is why the per-state counts are labeled as records on file by state rather than a live total. The Canadian province counts were verified live on July 2, 2026.
