Detailed Summary

Based on a representative sample of Kalamazoo County (Comstock area) wells, the subsurface is generally characterized by several distinct sequences. The upper 10-30 feet are usually brown sand or sandy/clayey surficial material, often including thin muck or organic horizons. This is typically underlain by extensive alternating lenses of clay, sandy clay, and gravelly clay (to as deep as 100+ feet), interbedded with zones of clean sand, sand and gravel, or coarse gravel. The deepest productive water-bearing zones – and the main target for residential wells – are almost always medium-to-coarse sand or sand and gravel, typically between 60 and 100 ft but may be found deeper depending on local variations. The static water level for these wells generally ranges from 30-70 ft. Most wells are constructed with 4-5 inch steel or PVC casing, and use rotary or cable-tool methods, with grout installed to at least 54-108 ft. High capacity wells may penetrate deeper into thick clay and deeper gravel/sand layers.
