Detailed Summary

Based on synthesis of several well logs from Wisconsin Dells and surrounding rural areas, the characteristic stratigraphy consists of an upper unit of sand, sandy clay, or sandy gravel (typically to 70–90 ft) occasionally with intervals of clay or boulders, followed by increasingly coarse sands and/or gravels, with a regional transition to cemented, hard, and very water-productive sandstone at approximately 70–125 ft. In some cases, clay may be present between sand units. Most productive wells draw from the medium-to-coarse sand or the sandstone, with casing typically terminating at or just above the main sandstone body. Static water levels routinely fall between 20–110 ft below ground. The most common residential (5–15+ GPM) well depth is about 110–130 ft, while high capacity or deeper residential wells may reach 150–160 ft.
