L. Denton Water Well
Grant, MI49327
Typical Newaygo wells penetrate thick sand/gravel sequences interbedded with clay layers, ending in water-bearing coarse sand or sand/gravel below 70-120 ft. Most record static water levels between 4 and 40 ft. Residential wells typically reach the primary aquifer in the 75-100 ft range.

A representative subsurface geological profile in the Newaygo area consists of surficial silt or sand, underlain by several thick alternating clay and sand/gravel layers. Blue/gray and red/brown clay are commonly encountered from about 10 to 45 ft, usually overlain and/or underlain by silt/sand or gravel. The most persistent aquifer is found in coarse sand or sand/gravel beginning near 70-75 ft and extending downward, often to 120 ft. Most residential wells are completed within or just above this water-bearing sand/gravel. Static water levels tend to average 5-40 ft below grade. Rotary mud drilling (occasionally cable tool) and PVC casing are standard, with cement/bentonite grout to 60-150 ft. High-capacity wells may drill to 110-120 ft or deeper.
Depth (Feet) | Formation Type | Description | Characteristics |
---|---|---|---|
0 – 5 ft | Silt/Sand/Topsoil | Surface silt or fine sand, sometimes with a thin topsoil horizon. | Color: Brown to gray Hardness: Loose |
5 – 18 ft | Clay (brown/red/blue) | Dense clay, occasional thin gravel or silt pockets. May be red, brown, or blue/gray. | Color: Red, blue, or brown Hardness: Medium-Plastic |
18 – 44 ft | Sand/Clay/Gravel Interbeds | Alternating sand (fine to coarse), gravel, occasional clay layers; locally water-bearing. | Color: Brown, gray Hardness: Soft to medium |
44 – 73 ft | Clay, blue/gray or mixed | Thick clay, often blue or gray, silty or with some sand or gravel lenses. | Color: Gray/blue Hardness: Plastic |
73 – 120 ft | Sand/Gravel (Coarse, Water-Bearing) | Coarse sand and/or gravel; primary aquifer zone for residential and most high-capacity wells. | Color: Yellow to brown Hardness: Loose |
