The typical North Lake well penetrates alternating layers of clay, sand/gravel, and, in deeper wells, limestone/dolomite, with most residential wells finished in sand and gravel aquifers, and deeper/capacity wells reaching limestone.

Typical Well Depth
Static Water Level
Recommended Method
Based on synthesis of well logs, the North Lake region is typically underlain by (1) a shallow surficial clay or clayey till, (2) sand and gravel (the principal aquifer), often in multiple interbedded zones, (3) occasional lenses of gravel with stones or silty material, and (4) limestone or dolomite at greater depths (not always reached by domestic wells). Sand and gravel zones are the key water-bearing units for most wells, providing reliable yields for residential supply. Static water levels generally range from 10–52 feet below ground; residential wells (5–15+ GPM) are usually 40–70 feet deep with screens or open intervals in the lower sand/gravel, while higher capacity or deep wells may be finished at 170–200+ feet within limestone/dolomite or thick sand/gravel.
| Depth (Feet) | Formation Type | Description | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 – 6 ft | Clay (till, possibly stoney or sandy in some cases) | Brown/Tan/Grey clay, sometimes mixed with gravel or stones, low permeability, surficial cover. | Color: Brown/Tan/Grey Hardness: Soft to firm |
| 6 – 45 ft | Sand & Gravel Aquifer (interbedded, moderately sorted) | Sand and gravel layers, main aquifer zone for domestic wells, local lenses of fine sand, silt, or stones possible. | Color: Yellow/Brown/Grey Hardness: Loose to medium |
| 45 – 70 ft | Clay & Gravel/Silt/Stone Lenses (discontinuous, semi-confining in areas) | Interbedded lenses of sand, silt, clay, or gravel; can act as local confining or semi-confining units; may be absent in parts of the region. | Color: Variable, often brown/grey Hardness: Soft to medium |
| 70 – 180 ft | Sand & Gravel (deep aquifer, may include fine sand and clay seams) | Thick, often cleaner sand and gravel, deeper aquifer zone, good yields for high capacity wells; occasional fine sand or clay seams. | Color: Grey/Yellow/Brown Hardness: Loose to medium |
| 180 – 203 ft | Limestone / Dolomite (where present and penetrated) | Yellow or grey limestone or dolomite, consolidated, major water producer for the deepest/highest capacity wells, not always reached in typical residential wells. | Color: Yellow/Grey Hardness: Hard |
