A geological estimate for the Berrien Center area.
Typical Well Depth
Static Water Level
Recommended Method
Most sampled wells display an upper layer of soil (often sand, sometimes with gravel), followed by interbedded clay and sand/gravel layers. Brown, blue, or gray clays are frequent confining units. The basal aquifer is most often a thick sand and gravel deposit, usually ranging from about 40–132 ft deep depending on location. Most residential wells are completed within the upper portion of this aquifer. The most reliable yields (5-15+ GPM) come from screens set in these lower sand/gravel units, with typical static water levels ranging from 12 ft to 85 ft below grade. Anomalous or thin layers and extreme outliers (e.g., flowing wells, thick hardpan, etc.) were omitted from the generalized model.
Depth (Feet) | Formation Type | Description | Characteristics |
---|---|---|---|
0 – 6 ft | Topsoil/Surface deposit | Topsoil or muck, sometimes sand fill; locally may include fine gravel near the surface. | Color: Brown/Black Hardness: Soft |
6 – 22 ft | Sand and/or Gravel | Medium to coarse sand, occasionally interbedded with gravel; main surficial aquifer. | Color: Brown Hardness: Medium |
22 – 50 ft | Clay with sand and gravel inclusions | Gray, brown, or blue clay; may be gravely or sandy in places. Acts as a confining unit. | Color: Blue/Gray/Brown Hardness: Stiff |
50 – 85 ft | Sand and Gravel (Aquifer) | Thick, coarse sand and gravel; primary aquifer for most wells. High yield and good water quality. Typically the main screened interval. | Color: Brown/Gray Hardness: Loose |
85 – 110 ft | Clay (locally with gravel) | Another confining layer, gray to blue clay, sometimes containing gravel. | Color: Gray/Blue Hardness: Stiff |
110 – 132 ft | Sand and Gravel (Basal Aquifer) | Coarse sand and gravel becoming cleaner at base; main aquifer for higher capacity or deeper residential wells. | Color: Gray/Brown Hardness: Loose |
